The dramatic spire on the new Chapelfield Shopping Centre in Norwich is illuminated using a selection of LED fittings supplied by the Light Projects Group. The impressive scheme uses a combination of KIM CFL Colour Changers to light the semi-transparent ovoid, with LEDSTAR3 LEDs at each intersection point in the surrounding Helix. At night, a selection of detailed programmed colour schemes are selectable which include the selection of the seasons, the equinox, Christmas and indeed the local Norwich FC colours. Apart from the special scene which includes over 20,000 lighting cues so creating a striking landmark for the city.
The 14 M spire for the new 56,000sqm Centre was designed by Rob Olins Architectural Sculpture, on behalf of main contractors Lend Lease, and installed by Alan Dawson Associates.
The LEDs used in the CFL Colour Changer are not only very powerful (emitting approximately 40 times more light than conventional LEDs) but also have extremely long life (50,000hours) and low lumen depreciation. In addition, they contain no glass or mercury and are both shock and vibration resistant.
The driver unit mixes light output from each LED creating strong saturated colours but without the losses associated with conventional filtered light. Full DMX control provides huge flexibility including zero – 100% dimming, activation at any level and pulse switching.
